Dog breeders: breeding your dogs the unnatural way?

Question: Dog breeders: breeding your dogs the unnatural way?

(Posted by: the intimidator on 2010-02-28 14:07:16)

We knew a lady who bred bull terriers, she was a great breeder and people were buying her pups like crazy- - but heres the weird thing, she didnt breed her dogs the natural way? i guess she got the sperm from the male dog and injected it into the female...now how does this work? don't you have to wait till the female is in heat, and how did she get the sperm from the male dog?! is this even possible? okay, so, do they make dog- dummies for the male to hump and release sperm into a pouch thing? or do you have to do it yourself, handle the dogs penis and get him to ejaculate? :x

Its possible,i hate to say this but you get the sperm from the dog the same way you would from a human!!!.the girl will need to be in season when this is done in order for her to release her eggs add-i know people that do inseminate dogs this way.i also know they use their hands to get the dog to ejaculate!!.yukkkkkkkkkkkk

Well I assume that it's possible since people do that sometimes. And this is pretty much the only way that they breed pigs. I don't know how it works... but I assume she does it because it is safer for the female, if not both dogs. She just waits until the female is in heat, probably.

What do you mean is this even possible? hello people do IVF and AI all around the world. And just like in those situations the sperm has usually already been collected and stored for later use. vetinfo.com/ artificial-insemination-dogs.html

Check out this link, it is to FrozenPuppies.com. frozenpuppies.com/ Frozen semen is a GREAT way to bring new bloodlines into a kennel from another country or even just from the other end of your own country without having to transport dogs for hours on planes and buses.

This is very popular practice in livestock especially horses which is where I see it the most. They do wait till the mare (or bitch in you case) is in heat to inseminate her. With horses the way the collect the sperm is they bring an in heat mare by the stallion stall to tease him then when he is ready they have a dummy built that he mounts and mates with. In some cases he ejaculates into the dummy in other cases he ejaculates into a sleeve that someone has to hold while he does his thing:) The reason behind this is protection of expensive animals and the convenience. You dont have to ship your mare to get bred you can just ship the seamen.

If she has no stud dog on the premises, she's breeding the same way livestock breeders breed their horses and cattle--you get the frozen sperm and do it yourself. You CAN buy frozen sperm from show dogs, you just have to be in the loop for this since it's a niche market. The pedigrees still list both dogs as parents to the puppies, and they can be shown, it's not a disqualification to have it done this way.

I work at a veterinary hospital that does canine artificial insemination, mainly for show dogs. Yes, the b**** does have to be in heat when you inseminate her, but she doesn't necessarily have to be in heat when the semen is collected from the dog. To collect semen from the dog, you use a teaser b****, i.e. you get the dog interested in a b**** in heat, but you don't allow him to mount her, you use a sterile plastic bag to collect the semen. After you collect the semen, you can either ship it fresh (unfrozen) overnight to inseminate a b****, or you can freeze it for later use. You have to be careful when freezing semen, however. If it's low-quality, i.e. if a large number of the spermatozoa are deformed and/ or non-motile, freezing the semen will render it useless. Also, with low-quality semen, the b**** must be inseminated surgically, i.e. the semen must be placed directly into her uterus or oviducts. If the semen is fresh and is of high-quality, the b**** can be inseminated non-surgically, i.e. a sterile plastic pipette is used to insert the semen into the cervix.

A vet can do a sperm collection and yes you have to wait until the female and is heat and then the vet does the A.I. on her. Same thing just the vet gets a lot of money.

It's called Artificial Insemination. A lot of breeders do it. Yes, you have to wait until the female is in heat and would be ready to accept a male. How do you think you get the sperm from a male? Yes, It gets collected and frozen. Thus, frozen semen. There are reasons some breeders don't let them breed "naturally ". It could be their using frozen sperm from a dog that deceased. It could be that the breed can not safely breed, they that will fight. It could be that it's more likely that the female will become pregnant. My own male will be collected this year, this way, he genes can be passed on and used when either my female is old enough and has proven herself or if I find a female that is more suitable / complimentary later on.
