To keep track of their breeding lines and so that they know the background of their dogs. A knowledgeable breeder will acknowledge the good and bad points of these dogs and breed accordingly.

To determine the background of their dog and see if they are compatible to be in their breeding program.

To expound on the above answers. Remember, the pedigree is a "family tree ". When comparing pedigrees one can tell if 2 dogs are related, and how. Also, any "show titles " won by a dog will be notated. As: CH. JoJo..meaning the dog has won its conformation championship. Or CH. JoJo C.D.....the CD designating an obeidence title. etc etc. Also, many pedigrees will list health clearances, as Hip scores, eye clearances. A "real " dog breeder is able to read much more in a pedigree, as they have done way more research and know who most of these dogs are through attending dog shows, visiting other kennels, through breed magazines and books, and correspondence with owners. So they pretty much have a "picture " of these dogs in their heads. They will know or have a general idea, or be able to "read " from the pedigrees dog's colors, if a dog has produced champions, variations in coat, size, head type, length of body, leg length, substance, tail set...general conformation, as well as temperaments. It is all very involved.
