Question: Just got 6 yr old rescue dog, house trained but pees indoors for attention. any ideas how to deter this?

She normally goes in the same place, but if I put paper/ pads down, she'll go somewhere else. It's usually just before I go to bed (even if I let her out beforehand). Is this a boredom/ attention thing, do you think?

First don't 'let' her out, take her out, walk her till she eliminates. Then give plenty of praise. If this is the only time she pees in the house that is all you will have to do. Take her out just before bedtime. Dogs do not pee for attention or revenge, they pee 'cause they have to pee.

There is a couple things you should do...when you initially let her out to pee, dont let her back in until she does...and when she does, give her enthusiastic praise. and when she pees inside, try and catch her in the act, and once she squats, scoop her up and set her outside as fast as you can...again if she finishes outside, give lots of praise. keep doing this for about a month straight, and she will get the idea to ask to go out.

A dog that pees indoors is not house trained. You need to go walkies and when she pees praise her. When she pees in house tell her "bad girl " then take her out again. You must persevere, she will learn eventually, I`m not so sure about putting pads or paper down. She needs to know its not acceptable to use the house as a toilet, and your giving mixed signals. Patience my friend, patience is all you need. She could of had a hard life, so a little understanding and a lot of love is probably all she needs. Take care of her.

If you have just got your dog she will be confused. She is not peeing indoors for attention and she is she doing this because she is bored. There is no point in letting a dog out for its last pees and poos, you must TAKE IT OUT. You should also praise her when she obliges. I have had dogs for over forty years and I have always gone into the garden with them at bedtime to make sure that they have a pee. Unfortunately your dog does not know what is expected from her, consequently she may not be performing. If you think that she is bored you should give her more exercise and play with her. You must also re-clean your floors to stop her peeing in the house. You will not need puppy pads if she has more exercise and if you also TAKE HER into the garden regularly. After a dog has urinated or defecated in the house, obviously you will clean this up. Perhaps you think that you have got rid of the smell and your friends will possibly confirm this, however your dog will still be aware of a smell. Your dog thinks that your house is a bathroom; dogs have a much greater sense of smell than we have. In the UK there is a washing powder to use in washing machines called Ariel get the BIOLOGICAL version Or get some special cleaning solution from the pet shop and clean your floor with this. When you are sure that you have cleaned every part of the floor that your dog has pooed or peed on do the following. When your dog urinates outside and when it is in full flow use a catch phrase I say “get one”, always use the same catch phrase when your dog obliges. Praise profusely afterwards, let your dog sniff around the yard/ garden and play with it. Use your catchphrase for the rest of your dog’s life and when it’s an adult it will pee on command. If your dog urinates on the floors or carpets that you have cleaned, you have not cleaned them enough and you will need to do them again. NEVER EVER USE PINE DISINFECTANT BECAUSE THIS ENCOURAGES A DOG TO URINATE,

A dog that pees indoors isn't house-trained. You have to train her. Take her out regulary and make sure she goes! When she does let her back in and give her plenty of praise.

Ignore the others. She is housetrained, if she only goes at this time. It's far more likely to be caused by separation issues, a very common problem in rescue dogs who've had several homes. Contact your rescue centre as they may have good advice, then find a good behaviourist and enrol her in obedience classes. Also, don't make a huge fuss of her. You might also want to start reenforcing her housetraining. Get some tasty treats (tiny pieces of cheese are good) and give her one with lots of praise whenever she eliminates outside. Also, when she goes out tell her go pee, or some other command, then tell her 'good pee' and give her the treat when she does so. She'll soon learn to go on command, a very useful thing to do. I would give more advice, but I think you should get advice from someone after they have met your dog, in case I'm wrong.
