Training is going to be the same as with any other dog, but you need to be firm/ fair, and a strong leader that your dog won't question. These breeds are very strong, stubborn, but easy to train if you are kind. They are very sensitive, and you have to be positive when working with them on anything. A harsh word, heavy hand, or harsh movements will galvanize these breeds, and cause them to shut down, not trust you, and be soo much harder to train or become aggressive. Just be kind, patient, and understanding. If the dog doesn't get something you're trying to teach it, try a different approach, these dogs have short attention spans. I also recommend short training sessions. 10 to 15 min. a few times during the day, and to always end the session with a positive note. Make it fun for the dog, and you will have wonderful results. If you already talked to a professional dog trainer you may want to enlist their help so you are sure you are doing things righ. Its a great idea to start out right, especially with a breed that has a bad rep. Exercise is also key to easy training. Always exercise the dog before training to help the dog focus. If the dog starts to show disinterest, gently guide the dog back to what you are doing. Sometimes with this breed you must physically guide them back, but never harshly. Gently guide their head toward you, and praise when they make eye contact. treat them like you would small children who are still learning. It helps build the trust you need in order to work with them. |
