A good trainer is one who has a lot of experience with dogs, know all about their behavior, is gentle with them, know how to train dogs with tricks that work quickly. he should also know how to deal with difficult dogs. when looking for a trainer, try and observe him for one training session. observe the other dogs/ puppies and see whether they are happy. this is important as in a happy environment the dog will learn faster. try and find a trainer through someone whose dog has been trained by him... |

No two dogs are the same, so I would look for a trainer that was not locked rigidly into one mindset & was unwilling to adapt their style of training & the tools they used to work with each individual dog in front of them. I would expect the trainer to be able to clearly explain why they would use a particular training method or tool over another one on my dog & for the training to be geared to the temperament of my dog. The proof of the pudding would be reflected in the trainer’s ability to teach my dog what behavior was expected of it & ensure that is was very clear in its head that bad behavior caused an immediate negative consequence the dog would rather avoid & compliance was rewarded with praise. I would not want a trainer who easily irritated by a dog, because their dissatisfaction with the dog’s basic temperament would be reflected in their ability to train it & a dog’s success at obedience is dependent on the quality of training it receives. |

Are you asking about a professional trainer? Professional trainers come in all different shapes, sizes, experience etc. You will find professionals who will not go near an American Pit Bull Terrier. Some trainers use 'clicker'. Some use other forms of training. In all, when it comes down to it just basically if the trainer fits your dog and you. And you get the results you wanted. Some people want all the way through finishing, placing, hand signals and off leash recall. Some just want to get their dog to sit/ stay and walk well on a leash. It is personal preference. I prefer a trainer who uses calm assertive pack leadership training. No treats. Compulsion and praise. That is my opinion. |
