Deaf dog training tips?

Question: Deaf dog training tips?

(Posted by: Destiny on 2008-12-09 14:49:29)

What is some good reading material on teaching signing to a deaf dog? What are some good books on ASL (american sign language)? I know a lot... but need a brush up on it to help my dog and I. Thanks By the way she is a dalmation.

There are a lot of training tips here: deafdogs.org/ and remember, dogs don't speak English, or any other verbal language, body language and hand signals are much more "animal " and should be encouraged even in training a dog that can hear. It's hardly a set back, except for getting attention at any kind of a distance.

Have you considered a vibrating collar? They're not the same as remote shock collars (although some come with both functions). I've heard a lot of great success stories about people using them to communicate with deaf dogs. American sign languages is probably much too complex to use as the primary means of communication with a deaf dog. If your dog understands it then that's fine, but there's no reason you can't develop your own hand signals.
