What is the best way to prepare myself for 4h dog training?

Question: What is the best way to prepare myself for 4h dog training?

(Posted by: doggirl2011 on 2010-01-16 07:26:09)

I have asked this question before but did not get very many answers! should I be doing research or practicing basic commands? And I have tried to teach her (Sadie 5yrs Siberian Husky) to come and listen but the only practicing grounds I have is the backyard.....and she doesn't seem interested in being around me and paying attention to commands when I'm out there... some of you also told me to practice the "look @ me!! " command but i can't seem to keep her attention for very long but will keep working on it! if there are any other things that anybody thinks I should be doing please let me know!!! Thanks so much for the advice, i promise I intend to put it to use!!

You can maybe check out a good dog training book from your local library. You also will need a leather or fabric 4-6 foot leash for your dog, a collar (will depend on your leader and program), and some good training treats (try hot dogs or cheese, just small pieces). You need to train your dog to sit and look at you. This can be done in front of you and on your left side. Reward anytime he looks at you even for a second. You cannot practice what you don't know so go to the training sessions. Your leader will teach you the skills and exercises that you need to know. Do the homework. This is very important. The dog cannot just learn the skills in class. Those same skills must be done at home and on leash. So not give this dog a reason to disobey your commands. It'll only increase his bad habits. I feel that any mentally sound dog can learn new things irregardless of breed or age. Good luck with your dog and have fun. Oh a good book for obedience for kids is "Dog Training Projects for Young People " By Joel M. McMains. This isone that I often make handouts from for my own 4H classes.

Get a long lead(6ft) and put her on it. Put some treats in your pocket Teach her to sit, then stay also down. When she does one of these commands for you give her a treat. Keep practicing everyday, but not to long or you will lose her attention. Don't try to teach her anything when she is running loose in the yard - you'll never get her attention that way. Make sure she is on the lead when training her. Good luck.

If you can't keep the dogs attention, your treats aren't good enough. Get better treats. I use hot dogs sliced up into little bits, try it. If that doen't keep the attention of the dog, do the training before any meal times while the dog is hungry, but still use high value treat. Check out training information on dogscouts.org.
