Oh my, please don't let your dog get away with growling at you! If she does this again, you need to tell her No! And put her on her back. Unless you think she's going to try to bite you. In either case, you need to work on training her first. Before tricks should come the essentials. She obviously isn't looking at you as the pack leader if she's growling at you because you aren't giving her treats. As a matter of fact, I would not give her any treats for a week, but that is just me. If you haven't ever looked into Obedience Training, you really should. There are some very simple and basic rules to follow. Do not let your dog be your leader, number one rule. Your dog should look to you for direction while on a walk, not the other way around. Try this, put your dog on her leash, before you even leave the house. Have her sit at your left side, beside you. Open the door, and you go out first, then the dog follows. Have her sit once you get outside of the house again. Start your walkby telling her Heel, walk at a brisk pace, with your dog always at your left side. Do not let the dog determine where your walk will take you. You decide the direction and go that way. If she is pulling ahead of you, you need to give her a correction and tell her Heel. Firmly. A correction involves a quick snap of the leash. Not a pull or choke, but a good fast snap, like you are cracking a bull whip, not that many people have bull whips, but picture Indiana Jones. When you stop, while on your walk, she should stop and sit beside you. If she doesn't you make it happen. Tell her to sit. A good way to teach this is, start walking, say heel, go only a few paces, and slow down then stop, get her to sit, do it again, over and over. eventually, they get it, when you stop you want me to sit. |
