Crawl stick 'em up and play dead retrieving (not just toys, but useful things like your cell phone or socks) roll over scent discrimination painting balance a cookie on his nose hold a cookie in his mouth without eating it until given permission say his prayers smile smoke detector heeling (not just walking on a leash, but holding a position relative to your left foot, regardless of whether he is on a leash and regardless of whether you move forward, back, to the side, or turn) spin left/ right do a figure eight around your legs I'm not sure what you would call average. Some dogs know more and some know less. Does it really matter? He's a great dog. You're having fun teaching him and he's having fun learning so why stop? For a dog to be truly happy he needs both physical and mental stimulation throughout his life, so training should never stop. You might want to look into Dog Scouts. They have merit badges to work on that would give you some ideas and goals to work on. dogscouts.org There are lots of books on dog tricks. Carol Lea Benjamin has a good one. There's one of those "Idiot's guide " books on tricks. You can find all kinds of tricks online especially if you look at clicker training sites. Shirley Chong has some good ones, including teaching the dog how to file his own nails. The Take a Bow Wow series of videos has some great information on training with step by step instructions for teaching many interesting and useful skills, including things like turning lights on and closing doors. And yes, tiny dogs can operate lights if you get them a light extender which is available from the Take a Bow Wow site: takeabowwow.com
