How do i teach my dog tricks?

Question: How do i teach my dog tricks?

(Posted by: (: on 2010-02-16 17:39:15)

How do I teach my dog how to do tricks and listen when I call his name? He knows how to sit but only when I bribe him with food and I want to just say sit and he automatically sits - WITHOUT food. Any quick and easy ways? Some of the tricks I want to teach him are play dead, sit without food, stand up, lay down, and roll over. Please be specific and e- mail me or IM me at Ayuka_Adorkable@hotmail.com for further information. :) Thank you!

I taught my dog all of those tricks and started with food like you did. now i just hold my hand like i have food and pretend, or just use food. if you do it enough they will learn. good luck!

Hello, you must slowly take the food away. Start by once-in-a-while not giving him the food, but instead just hold the food and praise. Then, it'll be a game for him. He'll have to guess when you're going to give him a treat. ALWAYS mix it up! Then, without food, he'll eventually do it. BUT, make sure you give him a treat once a week for doing a sit, down, or roll over. Now for teaching him the tricks, sit is easiest. - Say sit, place him in a sit with pressure on the lower back with your hand similar to a bite (he'll sit, NOT TOO MUCH PRESSURE :S). - Say down while he's in a sit, and place him in a down by: + giving him the scent, bringing the food down inches from his nose so he has to down + OR, place him physically into a down and praise and treat. - Roll over, in a down, physically roll him over AFTER you say your command word. treat after the roll (RIGHT AFTER). -Stand up, in whatever his position, give him the scent of the food and bring it up and away from him. He'll most likely follow. DON'T forget the command signal first! NOW THE TRICK TO IT ALL. One trick at a time. PATIENTS, and consistancy! Have fun!
