Question: What to do about house-training my boxer?
(Posted by: Jennifer on 2010-02-12 18:57:17)
Ok, so I'm completely lost as to what else to do with my boxer. I'm trying to train him the way I trained my black lab and it's completely not working. I'm not the greatest with thinking of new ideas and I've heard that puppy pads are not the greatest thing if your dog chews everything up. He has this one room in my house that he decided that it's his "potty room " It doesn't matter if he JUST came inside from going potty, but he'll go in that room and take a dump or pee. Each time I notice it, I take him in there and spank him and throw him outside for a little bit then when he comes back inside, I put his nose in it again and throw him in his cage. Anyone have any ideas on what else I can try doing to deter him from going inside and actually taking it outside? |

1. Puppy pads are a useless waste of money 2. "Spanking " and punishing your dog for defecating in the house is not effective unless you catch the dog in the act. 3. Shoving his nose in it *after* he's come back inside will confuse the dog further. After that amount of time he has no idea what he did wrong. 4. You need to *really* scrub the affected area to ensure the scent is completely out of the flooring. Buy a crate. Put the boxer in the crate whenever you cannot diligently supervise him. They key is to not allow a time for him to defecate in the house. You're either right there watching him, or he's in the crate. Yes, he will whine, ignore it. When he defecates outside, praise heavily. |

When you see him heading to that room stop him and take him back outside let him stay there for ten minutes bring him in again if he still goes for the room repeat the first step if he makes it past you and goes and you catch himgrab his collar dont say a word even if he's still going and take him out clean the spot up while he's out and when you bring him in see what he does.by rubbing his nose in it you may have taght him that this is where you go hope this helps |

And just what have you accomplished by hitting the dog when he goes in the house? If you don't catch them in the act you can't scold them for it. And you should never hit your dog, ever. And by throwing him in his crate is not a solution either, they should never be used as punishment. If he comes inside and potties them you aren't making sure he goes before coming back in and you aren't watching your dog while in the house. If you can't watch his every move then you need to crate him. If you don't want to crate him when you can't watch him, then you need to tether him to you. Also, Boxers are totally different than Labs when it comes to training. With Boxers, they are independent thinkers and there has to be a reason for everything they do. Labs will do it just because you say so, where as Boxers would just as soon tell you off and walk away. |
