(Posted by: Ben on 2010-02-18 12:53:52)
I have a brand new maltese, about 6 weeks old and I am ready to begin house training/ potty training him. Does anyone have any suggestions or have you had luck in the past? |

You are doing a good thing by starting early. I kind of waited with my shih tzu before training her because I thought she was too young and wouldn't understand. Believe me, that made it much more difficult. I then struggled for weeks and weeks before making any progress. Eventually I started looking online for help just like you are doing. There is a lot of information out there and it will really help you. I am kind of hopeless though and just wanted to get my puppy trained and be done with it. So I read some reviews on dogclasses.org before I finally purchased their top recommendation. It was a big help. I have notice the web site has changed a bit since I first visited it but the #1 recommendation is still the same. |

You need to train yourself to monitor when she drinks water or eats anything to take her outside. It may take quite a few times since she is only six weeks. Pee posts are a handy tool as well, it is a stake that you put into the grass that makes your puppy want to use the bathroom. Hope this helps. |

Start with puppy pads for inside durations and take the dog out every hour or so in the beginning to spot you want them to go, when they do praise and give a treat. set them up to suceed by taking out often. |

Some people like to use puppy training pads but if you don't want to waste money on that there is another way of training him. You need to take him out before and after everything. So when he wakes up from sleep take him out and just as he starts to go say go PP or go Potty. If you say it when he's sniffing around the grass he'll think go PP means sniff the the grass and/ or mess around. And do the same for everything he does. So before and after eating and drinking, excitement... Here is a link you might wanna try out. |

House training a puppy is nothing to do with luck, its hard work. A puppy must be taken out every hour, after it wakes up and after it has eaten. The puppy must be praised when it eliminates and if you want to have a well trained puppy you should also be diligent during the night.(I try however I often fail) When I get a new puppy I sleep downstairs for the first few nights. I set my alarm to enable me to take my puppy outside for a pee. Unfortunately I am a heavy sleeper, consequently I make provisions for my puppy, if it wants to urinate before I wake up. I use newspapers to absorb urine which they have passed in the garden and I place this on top of a pad of newspapers, then if the puppy wakes up before I do it pees on the newspapers. My GSD's have been house trained at a very early age, regardless of the fact that they sometimes pee on newspapers during the night. Nevertheless you must be diligent during the day and you must stay at home with them. |
