Question: Help with house training my puppy!?
(Posted by: Laura on 2010-03-08 01:03:15)
I have an 11 week old yorkie russell. When we brought him home last weekend he was weeing & pooing on the paper fine but now he seems to be going everywhere! In the space of an hour yesterday he had had 4 wees. This morning when I came down to him he had weed 3 times & pooed twice in the kitchen but not on the paper. He has a dog flap which he uses to go in & out of but never to go to the toilet. This morning I took him outside & after 5 mins he went back through the dogflap & tried to wee right next to the newspaper! Crate training is not an option as we work 9- 5 monday- friday. Any suggestions?? |

The keys to good housetraining include: * Using a crate to prevent accidents and make it more likely that your pup will eliminate when you take her outside; and * Rewarding your puppy handsomely whenever she does the right thing in the right place. Punishing your pup for mistakes can actually make housetraining harder. dogtime.com/ housetraining-for-puppies.html |

After feed times take him in the garden until he goes watch for it and fuss and praise him when he does.He will associate the fuss and love with the wees in the garden. If you catch him in the act in the house do what his mother would do to get his attention she doesn't shout with a constant bark she does one quick sharp yap.So shout NO! or AH! that will make him look up at you lift him up and take him out with no talking.Once out if he finishes off praise and fuss him.Dogs react to fun and praise is fun.Shout at him and he will get confused as to why and scared as he doesn't know why your threatening him.Clean the areas of the kitchen he's used to wee but first soak the wee up on a dried baby wipe or j cloth and place it between two sheets of newspaper.Put the paper over his chosen area to wee .Each day move it a step closer to the back door.He will associate the back door with wees and the garden with wees and praise. |

I have a puppy too and i am finding the best way to ensure he goes outside is supervising him and rewarding him. Take a couple of weeks off from work and do not leave your dogs side. If he starts to go inside the house a calm "no " and take him into the garden. If he does any wee or poo in the garden it is a HUGE good boy and lot of cuddles and a nice chunk of something tasty. You have to catch him at it to teach him good/ bad. |

It will be very hard for you to house train him if you work Mon-Fri 9-5, because you wont be around to train him? When house-training a puppy you need to be there when he does it and tell him no. Take him outside once he starts sniffing the ground and 5-10 minutes after feeding. Once he is out you will need to wait until he goes then gives lots of praises and treats. The only way you can designate where he goes to the toilet when you are not there is to put him in a big crate. You dont need to get once the right size for the pup, but why not try getting a large one? Place newspaper on half of the crate then his bed on the other half, then once he gets used to going on the paper then start opening the door so he has the whole room to roam around. |
