Question: How to train a dog not to pee or poop in the house?
(Posted by: ANIME-O on 2009-09-01 13:44:14)
I have a PROBLEM... I have a black lab- mix about 3 years of age and he tends to make a mess of the house by pooping and peeing when left alone. We have a dog sitter that comes to look after all three dogs while we're away, but only HE makes the messes... He is an outside dog, but so are the other three and they are absolute ‘angels’ when left alone inside. [EXCEPT for the sofa jumping…XD] SO how do I train him NOT to go inside? Is it the fact that he is a male dog? Should I get him fixed? [Snip. Snip!] Another problem is that he LOVES to spray where our oldest female lies down, or sits. [He never seems to run on empty.] He ALWAYS seems to sniff her butt every time she moves, which is reeeeaaaallllyyyy annoying/ creepy/ disgusting… He ALSO is losing hair on his lower back/ butt and I don’t know why. I was thinking allergies? I'm in a bind. Please help me out!!!!! |

I would teach your dog crate training, which goes hand in hand with house breaking. Here are two videos that might help puppiesanddogsinfo.com/ episode-18-how-to-crate-train-your-puppy/ puppiesanddogsinfo.com/ potty-training-your-puppy/ good luck |

I bring my beagle to petmart every Saturday. maybe you should to. it's relatively cheap. |

Get him a crate. Start housebreaking from scratch. Take him to the vet about his hair loss. While you're there, make the appointment to have him neutered. You can't be planning to breed him so get him fixed before he's too old. He'll be healthier for it. Dogs don't spray... cats do. I don't know what you're talking about unless he's marking territory in which case he's just peeing to show dominance. |

I agree with the above answer. Also, how to train him to go outside. We usually whack the dog or cat on the nose, and then put him outside. Getting him fixed may be a good idea if he is always trying for the female dog in the house. |

This makes me absolutely livid. Why do you have dogs if you keep them all outside, why the hell is he NOT fixed, why have you neglected to take him to the vet for losing hair and why is he 3 years old and still untrained? If you can't handle your dogs, (and you obviously have no clue what's going on) then you need to give them to someone who can. You're an unfit owner and you need to accept that. |

Sounds like your dog is showing dominance. Think you may have to crate train your dog. Put the dog on strict time to pee and poop and then crate. Usually dogs don't like to Pee and Poop where they sleep. Regulate his food and water. |

I think this should work if not you should know your getting advice from a 10 year old I think i know the problem he has separation anxiety. it means you bonded to tight with your dogs when you leave they get sad or panic until you come back. I know how to treat this you should go to the vet and say he has separation anxiaty he should give you pills. Then go out side for 5 seconds when he doesn't make mess reward him with small treat pieces add 5 seconds everytime but don't reward everytime only do it every other time or every 3rd time or something |

Sometimes neutering your male dog does help them to mark less; don't count on it completely, though, because I neutered my dog and he STILL marks, but just not as much. You have to train the dog to go outside. Rebuke him when he goes inside; make sure he understands what he did was wrong. I put my dogs nose where he marks and tell him "No! " firmly. Usually he knows and puts his head down or runs away and hides since he knows he's in trouble. When he does need to go, take him out and reward him when he goes where he is supposed to. Regarding his marking where the female lies; it may be a territorial thing. Maybe he doesn't like that her smell is there and he wants to mark it as his own. OR, it could even be that he thinks he owns her and wants to mark where he smells her. My male dog marks where ever my female dog pees. Sometimes, he even marks HER while she is peeing! Lastly, about him losing the hair on his back and bum, it may be that he has been biting at those areas, if he can reach. He might have fleas or mange and maybe just trying to bite the itch away. If not, then maybe his diet is too salty; sometimes that causes hairloss. |
