DS: What do you see in the future of dog training?
In the past, dog trainers were more aggressive in their approach when it came to training dogs. Treats were rarely used and most trainers got their way through force or avoidance training. Currently, positive training, with little to no physical discipline, is the popular method. How do you think dog training will evolve in the next several years? We are sure to gain more of an understanding for dogs through more time and scientific studies. Do you think this will affect the way the general public train in the future?I wouldn't be surprised if more bans on what some people deem as cruel training tools such as remote trainers or prongs were put into effect to make way for purely positive training. I don't see a balance between the two extremes ever becoming a reality. I think things will continue to get more and more positive. Your predictions?Lmao Cougar If they do remove tools, do you guys figure it would result in more dogs being put down due to behavior problems? Or do you think people would find ways to use positive training to train out serious issues like aggression?Emily, that's an interesting alternative to a collar correction I wonder if the dogs learned their lesson.Bells, though dog training may not be " broken" there is always room for improvement. Launi The reason I said I don't see a balance becoming a reality isn't because of how you or I train dogs. I'm talking about the GENERAL PUBLIC. Before, people GENERALLY trained dogs soley with compulsion. Now, the idea is purely positive training. My point was, I don't think we'll see a general trend of people saying dogs need BOTH.

DS: Shy dog training suggestions?
The last 2 weeks I've been conditioning my 2 yr old dog to like being petted by strangers. We had awesome progress and he looked quite content. Today however he reverted back to being really shy again when two stranger tried to pet him. It was a little discouraging. I've had him since 8 weeks of age and he's just recently 2 months ago started being this shy and fearful. He actually loves kids though and has no problem being petted by them. I aim for him to be petted by 2 3 new people per day for his conditioning and he gets handling exercises by me in the house at least twice a day. Anybody have experience or have success stories on training their shy dog to love being petted by friendly strangers?Yes I agree with not letting any stranger pet my dog. However, he is going for his CGN Canine Good Neighbor test in a month and one of the requirements is to be petted by a friendly stranger. I use to encourage people not to pet him for same reason as yours, and that may have been a contributor of why he doesn't like it now, but even without the test I would still want to address any insecurities that my dog may have.tiptop his conditioning does not involve flooding. He gets loads of treats in every petting situation to create a positive association.

Free dog training - Opinions?
When I graduate my dog training school instead of going to some internship or working at a petstore before I start my own business, I'm just going to put an add for free private lessons on craigslist. I'll get the experience and I won't have to work for someone else. I figure once I train about 10 dogs from start to finish I'll have enough hands on to call myself an experienced dog trainer. Opinions?Jayse I've had dogs in my house since the day I was born, currently have four, two of which I trained myself, the other two my mom trained. Why would the public come to some kid fresh out of college? Because it's free I'm sure someone out there is going to pick the college kid who wants no money over the professional who wants $150 an hour.To everyone else Great ideas... didn't realize 10 was such a low number... As for the 7 years experience, does training my own dogs for nearly 21 years count towards that or does the 7 years only count after I'm done with the college couses?

Worst dog training class you were ever in?
If you have been in a seriously bad dog training class, tell me about it I was in one class where the instructor did her homework for a class she was taking, rarely looking up to see what and how we were doing... but not for long . What story do you care to share?

Possibly the most stupid and dangerous dog training method I have ever heard of?
Watched a re run of It's Me or the Dog and Victoria was working with a family that owned 3 Great Danes and one of the danes had a biting problem. Her method for getting him to stop was to " squeal and back off." Think about this. A dog is biting you and you squeal and move away from him. That's a submissive behavior in the eyes of a dog and sure the dog stops biting at first but that's basically telling the dog " hey you're the alpha I'm staying out of your way." Correct me if I'm wrong but wont the dog start becoming more dominant? What do you think?

Dog Training: recently dog more fearful?
My dog never ceases to challenge me. After we nail one thing, something else pops up. He's 2 yrs old now and has recently been acting up more fearfully whenever we go into a new indoor environment. It could be dog stores that we go to all the time, or a new dog training facility but not houses, he's been fine in all the houses we went I've taken him everywhere since 8 weeks of age and he's always had good experiences. However, he's now acting fearful and uncomfortable in these environments to the point where he will lose focus and disregard training cues he's known for months. He's always been a confident dog, I've never seen his tail down the first year of his life, but now in new situations he's unsure. I've been told by other trainers that it could just be his 2nd fear imprint stage. He was never big on people petting him, even me, he use to just walk away slowly, but now he ducks and backs away in these different indoor environments when people try to pet him. I'm now counter conditioning this by petting and treating with family and friends and neighbors. He's doing better, ie. he walked up to my neighbor and sniffed his pants he would never do this before . He has CGN CGC planned in 2 months, but I don't know if he's ready. He's got obedience down but his insecurities might hold him back.Any Advice? This is more of a frustrated trainer venting. Thanks for listening.Yes most people pet on his head which I know can be over whelming especially for a toy breed dog, BUT he has to be able to be petted on his head and back in order to pass the CGN test, since the average person child do not know to stay low and on the side and pet under the chin.
