Dog Training
Dog training information
Does dog training/obedience training really work and will it help my dog?
I have 2 pitbulls a male and a female, both fixed. Female is almost 3 years and male is about 2 and half.I also have 2 kids, a 19 month old and a 3 month old. Female dog, absolutely fine, loves them. male dog fine with baby, getting worse with toddler.Sometimes the male dog is fine, licks and plays with my son oldest but since he has started walking about 3 4 months ago he has started growling at him. Which worries me immensley. I love my dogs and treat them like my children. However if i HAD to i would give my dog away and if it came to it i may have to get him put down. I really do not want to get rid of my dog, i love him so much. But im not willing to risk my childrens lives. I live in new zealand and they have a zero pitbull big dog policy pretty much, pitbulls HAVE to be neutered so they will eventually die out , muzzled in public and on a lead at all time. If a pitbull is given to the local spca the only shelther there is they are put down immediatly. They do not get judged on a case by case basis. However my dog wouldnt pass the temprament sp? test anyway. he is terrible with other animals and now kids .When he was a puppy he had LOTS of socilization and obediance training until he was about 8 months old. We are thinking of starting it up again, but would it help or should i start looking for a new home for him?he gets daily exercise with my husband he takes both of them on an hour hour an a half walk every dayso its best to get him put down? i feel so guilty getting him and then doing that to him. its not fair. guess im going to have to have a serious talk with my husband. guess all my family parents, grandparenst etc will be happy

A dog training question?
My dog is a female, she is 7 weeks old and I am attempting to train her. I'll be taking her to obedience classes when she is old enough, but I wanted to teach her a few things beforehand. I taught her to sit. Now every time I walk in the door, she takes one look at me and sits. It's funny actually, last night in the middle of the night I took her out to use the backyard, if you get my drift. But anyway, she did her business, turned around, looked at me and sat. I tried to teach her stay and come, but she always stays and then comes and SITS It's cute, but not for much longer. Any advice?

Why do people still use the Old Method of dog training?
I am a dog trainer and I cannot figure out why people still use prong and choke collars for those of you who think they are safe I encourage you to try harnesses that don't pull on the neck. , and support harsh based punishment. Clicker training and positive reinforcement is so much easier and better to use. I don't know, maybe I am just down because I see so many people treating their dogs the wrong way, maybe I need reinsurance that I am making a difference.Ok wow. I really am shocked at how many people use choke and prongs. I am also shocked at how many people are hating the harness. My method of training is hands off, positive reinforcement, voice infliction, and harness use only. Yeah if YOU don't understand how to leash walk your dog, and YOU don't know the proper correction manors to get your dog to listen, then yeah harnesses won't work. What I meant by making a difference is trying to help people better understand the Canines mind set and make them realize that it isn't the dogs fault for bad behavior, it is YOU the owner. And for the record let me tell you when I train I can go " Wolf" on a dog establishing my Alpha role. But I don't touch or yell, I speak to him in his language. I am a New Updated Trainer, not an Old School lets use prongs and choke collars Trainer, it is time to update your point of view people. And I know some of you are like it works for me, yeah it well are you sure your dog is happy too? Seriously think.

How to change my husband's bad dog training?
We have a nine month old miniature pinscher, and I am constantly trying to train her. When I work with her, she seems to be interested and has quickly learned several commands. But my husband doesn't do anything like that with her, he just wrestles and plays with her, letting her bark, growl, and bite during play. I've told him that I don't want her to think that those things are acceptable, but he says she's so tiny that it's nothing to worry about Guidance?
Can anyone give me advice on formal guard dog training?
i just got a new puppy. German Shepard mixed with some lab possibly. we got him mainly for the purpose of being a guard dog. since we didnt have aalot of money for a full blooded pup we also dont have alot of money for k9 training. we want him to be a serious bad ass because we've had problems with people messing around the house, but we dont want him too be a nut so and attack the neighbors.anyhow if anyone knows of any books or website on sorta do it yourself k9 training, that would be great. also, we want him to be super protective, but does anyone know how he may respond if we have a baby after he is trained... as of right now he loves kids.also i have another dog thats a complete pansy... will she be a hindrance in training the pup?i just wanted him to attack on command... not pull babies from burning buildings... people train their dogs all the time without giving $3000 to a dog trainer... i could buy a gun for that much and considering that a dog is a moving target i think your delusional...

Dog training vs leting dog have freedom?
i couldn't really word the title well. Okay, so i trained my dog for about 2 hours a day. Which included walks, just looking at me, coming back to me, and then in house training learning tricks. When i did a lot, meeko seemed to love it at first then when I starrted teaching him new tricks, like cover eyes, or anything that doesnt involve lots of moving, he got bored. If it involved lots of movement, he liked it a little more. Now, i didnt do as much training this week cuz he got neutered so since we didnt do lots of training, he seems happier and listens to me a lot more and wants to be with me. when we walk, and i dont nag him, he barely pulls... why is this? I train about 5 10 mins each session unless its walks and he ignores me more vs not training as much i still did his basic tricks which he loves and he now wants to be with me and comes to me on his own now . Did i over work him even though it was short sessions.oh also he pays A LOT more attention to me nowYes, I train him with his kibble he LOVES food and is 9 months old
Dog Training Academy info?
I live in the St Louis area, and I'm looking into getting into dog training maybe for search and rescue, I think , and I'm looking for a good dog training academy. I'm aware that there are bound to be the people out here that will be completely against any kind of dog training, even if it's to save lives, but I'm hoping that there might be others that are a little more reasonable. Also, my Goldie is already almost a year and my Boxer is probably not going to be the most effective dog for this kind of thing, even though she's only 5 months old she's great, i love her to death, but I'm a realist . What's good? Malinois, Shepherds, Bloodhounds?
Dog training business....?
When my fiance and I graduate from dog training college we were going to start out working for someone else instead of having our own business, but I really would like to start our business right away. My problem is that I don't know if the area we live in would be great for a dog training business. It doesn't seem like many people professionally train their dogs, but maybe I'm wrong. So my question is Have you ever had your dog professionally trained and how much would you pay to do so...I know when my mother got her chi trained it was a lot but I wouldn't want to charge an arm and a leg.
