Question: Any special techniques for potty training dogs?
(Posted by: Leon on 2009-05-23 11:30:52)
Sometimes my fiancee and I go out of state to visit my family back home and we have had his mother watch out for our new dog enough to let him out to go to the bathroom. Our dog is 2 years old and he's house trained but I was wondering if there's a way to potty train him indoor as well to go in a certain area and if so, how is it done? |

In some pet stores, you can actually buy Dog Litter. It's similar to cat litter, only much bigger than thicker, often made from compressed newspaper. You will just have to buy enough in regards to what size dog you have. You can also buy Dog training pads, which I use for my 2 dogs, which I got at Wal-Mart. As for the training, that can be hard, as dogs are hard-wired NOT to go in the house, especially if they've been told that going in the house is bad. Try to get a small sample of your dog's urine, maybe from a grassy area he's gone, and put it in the litter or on the pad, and don't show any interest in it. He might feel he's about to be punished, when technically he didn't even do anything. Try to encourage him to go where you want, and praise him up if he does. It can be very hard to train a dog to go inside when they've been trained NOT to do that, but with patience and kindness, you can train a dog to do just about anything. Secrets to Dog Training, by Dog Trainer Expert, Daniel Stevens. It's a terrific book on how to train dog. kingdom-of-dog.blogspot.com/ Good Luck! |

While it's always easier to train a young dog or puppy, the following techniques for potty training will work on dogs of all ages. Whether you've bought a young dog or an older one, it is vitally important that you potty train it properly. With patience, nearly any dog will be trained. It's important to remember that a dog will never go to the toilet inside the house to upset or annoy you on purpose, they only will because they don't know any better. Don't be tempted to punish your dog for accidents as this won't help. Instead, take the attitude that it's your responsibility to potty train your dog properly. Firstly, clean all the places your dog has gone to the toilet thoroughly to get rid of all the smells that the dogs can pick up on. If they can smell it they may go there again. Take your dog out every morning and evening to the same spot in your garden and let it stay there until it goes to the toilet. It might help to put some feces in this place, then the dog will smell it and think it should go there. However this area should be kept relatively clean. When you can't keep an eye on the dog, it should always be confined to its crate until properly potty trained. Look for signs that the dog needs the toilet, and when it does take it immediately outside. Dogs often need to go after they've eaten or slept, so it may be a good idea to take it outside every morning and after meals. Knowing how to potty train a dog doesn't come naturally to most people, as many have a tendency to punish the dog. Don't make that mistake, as it will only damage your relationship with the dog. |

I would definetly advise against this, he may start marking things you do not want him to, and why would you want the potty stuff in the house if he is already housebroken? it is going to send mixed messages in my opionion.. |

Why would you do that? You will be setting up for disaster it is easier to take to a boarding kennel or get a friend to let dog out. What about an outdoor kennel with a dog house? |
