Question: How to potty train dogs?

So I have a shi- tzu that is about 14 months old. It took several months before I felt like he got the concept of peeing outside. I refuse to hit him or rub his nose in the pee like some suggest. For the most part he is pretty good. If he has to go to the bathroom usually he waits by the door in hopes someone lets him out. When I tell him to "go potty, " he does and understands me. However, the other day he pooped on the floor right in front of me! I told him "No, " stearnly and took him out. I feel a sense of guilt because I don't feel like he has a way to tell me that he has to pee. I was thinking of trying to teach him by putting a bell by the door, since he doesn't really bark. How long does this take to teach him the bell method? Any suggestions? I want to trust that he won't go to the bathroom in the house. |
