Recent problems with a potty trained dog?

Question: Recent problems with a potty trained dog?

(Posted by: tyrules3 on 2009-11-14 16:38:30)

My toy poodle is 5 years old and has been potty trained within her first year. The past three weeks she has refused to go outside. We had our carpets professionally cleaned because we thought it was an accident, but she did it again. We've kept her on a short leash the past two weeks inside the house and once she went to do it in front of us. She's done it about 10 times in a 3 week span. We've done some punishments like keeping her outside for most of the day or her normal one of going in her kennel, but it's not working. I'm frustrated and I don't know what to do.

Take her to the vet. Likely there's a medical reason behind why she is suddenly going to the restroom in the house (urinary track infections commonly cause this, though there are other medical issues that could be the cause as well). Any time there is a sudden change in behavior the dog should be taken to see a vet. Crates should never be used as punishment either- It's meant to be a safe and comforting den like area. If you need to put her in there for safety reasons ever it's going to seem like punishment to her. I don't much agree with locking the dog outside all day for punishment either.

I would leave her outside give her her food bowl and water. Make sure she dose her business. When she dose something right give her treats and play praise her like there's no tomorrow. Let her in and wait to see if she dose it again repeat this over and over till she gets the memo. Hope this helps.

Try bringing her to the vet. My friend once had a dog that was potty trained and it kept peeing in the house, it turned out to be kidney stones or something. There may be a health problem behind it. Punishing your dog by locking it outside is cruel, and it's pretty mean to lock her in a kennel.

Ever considered this may be a physical problem? UTI, bladder, kidneys.....Diabetes? Vet check up is highly suggested.

I would go to the vet a lot of times it's a bladder infection, i've known lots of dogs in the same situation and thats what it was
