Techniques for potty training a dog?

Question: Techniques for potty training a dog?

(Posted by: Shelly on 2010-03-18 14:06:51)

I was thinking about getting a puppy. I just wanted to know... What techniques did you use to potty train it? How long did it take? What products did you use...etc. Thanks in advance.

The best way to start the dog potty training process is to establish a breakfast and dinner routine for your dog. Once you establish this it is easier to predict when the puppy is ready to go out. If you feed the puppy at a certain time everyday then you can predict the time that the food takes to digest. You should always take a puppy outside immediately after they eat because the food can push on the bladder and cause an accident. Frequent trips outside will help with the process. If you happen to be outside when the puppy goes then you are at an advantage to reward good behavior. Using potty training sheets, then once they get comfortable move the sheet outside. If they used the restroom in the house, rub their nose near the mess then smack the bottom. Every time they went outside I usually gave them a treat and love on them. Hope that helps some.

Take it outside when it needs to pee.

Depending on how smart the dog is, it should be fairly quick to potty train your pooch. Dogs will start smelling, circling, then squatting when they have to go, at that time you want to take them outside. It's always a good idea to say "Go potty " or something like that, then you can ask them later on if they need to go. Once they go, make sure you praise them with either loving, verbal or treats so they know their deed was a good one. Puppies are wonderful, just make sure your ready if your pondering it. :-)

The keys to good housetraining include: * Using a crate to prevent accidents and make it more likely that your pup will eliminate when you take her outside; and * Rewarding your puppy whenever she does the right thing in the right place. Punishing your pup for mistakes can actually make housetraining harder.
