Question: How do i train a puppy to pee outside?
(Posted by: MyWonderfulSuicide on 2010-01-22 21:18:23)
Alright, I'll try and keep this short but I love Maddie to death. And we've put her through hell. But the damn dog just won't pee outside. When we're gone, we leave her our roommate's dog in the backyard. Then I get home from school, play with them, and let them out every stinkin' hour. Afterall, that's what the book said to do! When she gets inside she'll go to the corner of our kitchen and F- ing poop and pee there! Or she'll go in the rooms of the house. Normally I just shove her nose in it, spank her, and clean it up. But my room STINKS. She was born September 4, 2009. I'm sick of finding out her age so I just know she's older than four months. My father thinks it's too late to housebreak her. There's gotta be a way. Not to mention she's constantly biting people and chasing them down if they're moving and jumping. And getting between my legs when I run. She made me trip and I twisted my ankle... She almost hurt this runner because she bit him and jumped on him. What do I DO?!? Please, your help is dearly accepted... |

Get the book, How to Housebreak Your Dog in Seven Days, by Shirlee Kalstone. It costs $7.99 st Dogwise Books: dogwise.com Have it sent to you by the speediest method. Read and follow the directions in the book. Shoving her nose in it, spanking, shouting no, etc. DO NOT WORK. Everyone that is trying to help you housebreak this dog should read the book, too (maybe get their own copies). I know from my own experience that this book is *excellent* and it DOES WORK. It is not too late for this dog. The book will work for you, too, if you *carefully* follow *all* of the directions. You are going to need an good Odor NEUTRALIZER to clean every place she has ever peed or pooped indoors. Nature's Miracle is a good one but any brand will do. Go to petedge.com for one. It is much cheaper to buy it online but if you can't wait, almost any pet store should have some. Some brands can be used in carpet cleaning machines which you can rent at grocery stores. Get at least two gallons. Keep her on leash so he can't chase anyone. Take her to training classes. Clicker training is best. This dog can be totally rehabilitated. |

DON'T put your dog's nose in it and don't hit her. She has no idea that she's done anything wrong and aggression only leads to more problems. Be sure to thoroughly clean the areas where she has gone inside the house so that the scent is no longer present for her either, this will help keep her from returning to the same spot. When she does have an accident take her outside immediately following. Try taking her out a few times a day, preferably just after eating, with the specific intention of making sure she goes potty and praise her when she does go with either physical affection or a toy. I use a little bell right next to the door for my dog to ring before going out. |

Getting mad at the dog makes it worse and i totally disagree with shoving her nose in it and spanking the dog. that could totally make it worse, she'll start getting scared of you then she'll start peeing when you try to even touch her or pick her up. not a good idea to "spank " the dog. this is what i did with my dachshund/ boston terrier. i got him when he was 2 months old and he was fully potty trained by 2 1/ 2 months. i would put him out right when he wakes up(even if it's from a nap, no matter how short of nap) then about 5-10 minutes after he ate, i would put him out again, and leave him there until he goes, i would stay out with him though since he was only 2 months old. sometimes it took longer than other times, but after he went, i would praise him A LOT and give him a little treat, i would sometimes use a little piece of cheese, since dogs LOVE cheese. then about every couple hours or so i would take him out and again, stay with him until he goes, making him run around or play or something, that made him have to go more. while he is going potty, i'd tell him go potty, then say GOOD BOY! that way, if i say lets go potty, he'll go runnin outside and go potty. i would just do that every day until eventually he got the hang of it and started to sit at the door and stare at me until i let him out, then i would give him a treat for sitting at the door, letting me know he needed out. if my dog had an accident, i would say no, then put him out for about 10-15 minutes(by himself cause he's in trouble, just keep an eye on him if the yard isn't fenced in). even if he was done goin potty, i'd still put him out. just be sure to give LOADS of praise when she relieves herself outside. and don't get mad and upset at her. she doesn't know to go outside, she's gotta be trained to. as for the jumping on people and biting them, i'm not exactly positive how to deal with that. i could research and let you know what i find out and give you some websites. |

Well, for starters, it's very rare that a dog's completely 100% housebroken before 5-6 months of age just because they lack the bladder control. So your father is an idiot who doesn't know anything about dogs. BTW I've housetrained dogs who were six years old, no problem. Secondly, she pees and poops in an isolated corner of the house because she thinks that the act of peeing and pooping is bad, because you hit her for doing it. Thirdly, you haven't trained your dog in all the other requisite ways. You need to visit a qualified dog trainer. |

Rehome this puppy. She needs an owner who will house train her and obedience train her not to jump, chase or bite. Anyone who runs when there is a little puppy around is not too smart. Puppies will run with you and trip you and the puppy can also be seriously hurt. Walk when the puppy is around you...don't run. How did she bite and jump on a runner? If you were a responsible owner she would not be off leash outside of your property? No puppy deserves to be abused by shoving her nose in her accidents and being spanked by a bully who has no idea how to house train a dog. You are being cruel and abusive to a puppy you claim to love. The reason you are not able to house train her is that by hitting her and rubbing her nose it it you have taught her that the natural functions of elimination are a bad thing and she will be punished. She will try to find a place to eliminate where you can't see her and punish her. House training is not "letting " a dog outside. You have to take it outside every hour and stay with it so you can praise with enthusiasm when it obliges. If it poops and pees inside, that's your fault. Young puppies, like human babies have no control over their bowels and bladder. Most pups, with proper house training are not reliably trained until at leat 16 weeks of age. You have set this pup way back and you'll have to start from scratch...the RIGHT way. It will probably take longer now, due to the treatment you've dished out to her. BTW, your father is wrong. I have trained both a 7yo and a 10yo rescue dog in a matter of 3 days. These are dogs who had never been inside a house until they came here. |

My son would k i l l me if he ever found me out for this..his puppy is 5 or 6 months old.he was rubbing her nose in it too.he picked her up a little, to yell at her first then all of a sudden she peed down his head, hang on,lol i still have to laugh sorry.her problem is when they got her she would get let out and stay out 30minutes or longer, well they think they are out there to play.i was able to be home with all my dogs to train them.o k they are just like babies.they have to go out after waking up after eating and after playing, blah blah..blah you did not mention what kind of dog you have or how she can get to some one that is running to bite them.i hope this dog is not outside of a yard as you can get in a lot of trouble for that.if you need a fence get hold of me.my dad has a fence company in st.louis ,mo.if you live here.you can use your knee when she jumps on you.tap her nose and tell her no bite when she goes to bite.she pees tell her no pee, when she jumps tell her no jump.tell her no poop.use short commands.if these don't work, get hold of the dog whisperer or take her to obdienceschool.lol.good luck!!be ster when using these commands |
