Is it a good idea to crate train a puppy of 10 weeks?

Question: Is it a good idea to crate train a puppy of 10 weeks?

(Posted by: Mac74 on 2010-01-31 21:05:41)

I just recently adopted a 10 week old puppy, and she is very well behaved. It only took me one night to paper train her.I also have a 7 year old dog at home. When i brought the puppy home she had kennel cough so the adoption agency suggested keeping them seperate until the cough resolves. My question is, Is it ok to have the puppy sleep in a crate by herself? in other words on another floor(i have done this for 1 night and the puppy took to it just fine, she put up a little fuss, 10 mins at max, then slept through the entire night)My only concern is that the puppy starts to feel abandoned or unwanted by being kept away , even for a short period of time, am i overstaing the issuse or do i have a legitimate concern? Thanks for any help guys :)

Crate training is the way to go. it makes the puppy feel safe. if your puppy is scared they will go to the crate for comfort. it will also make it easier to board your puppy. believe me it will not feel abandoned. crate training will make both of you happier in the long run

I think it's absolutely a good idea to crate train your puppy. She won't feel abandoned. She'll learn when it's bed time, she goes to her crate. Don't feel sorry for her, she'll pick up on it and begin feeling sorry for herself. Crates are wonderful training tools. Just make sure you don't leave her in it for too long!

Yes it's a great time to crate train. She should get used to sleeping on her own. Be ready for the puppy crying but stay strong. She'll grow out of it. She's just adjusting to not having her litter mates to sleep with.

I'm an avid "Dog Whisperer " fan and as Cesar always says, we project our feelings onto our dogs. If crate trained properly, dogs actually like their crate. It is a safe, secure spot that is all their own. It should never be used as a "time out " spot or punishment. It can even be used other times during the day, not just for bedtime. If you cannot supervise your puppy during the day for small amounts of time, the crate is the perfect place for her to relax. I had a norwich terrier who loved his crate. All we had to do at night was say, "Let's go night night " and he couldn't get in his crate fast enough lol. The link below offers great advice on crate training. Good luck!

A crate is a good idea. She will begin to feel like it's her den and go there to rest even during the day if you keep it open.Just give her plently of care during the day and the evening before going to bed for the night.

Crates make particularly good tools for housetraining and help prevent boredom and separation anxiety. Check these links for more info. lnk.nu/ dogtime.com/ s02.html lnk.nu/ dogtime.com/ uxr.html
