How do i litter train a puppy?

Question: How do i litter train a puppy?

(Posted by: ♥Odkfk♥ on 2010-02-14 12:23:06)

I want the dog to be able to poop and pee in a litter tray when we are at work and when we come home we wouldn't mind if the dog does it's buisness in the tray or outside. We would clean up the buisness every day. Is there any other ways to potty train a dog? We can't be at home on weekdays for up to 8 hours but are at home all weekends. Thanks

Training a dog for the litter box is not something I've heard of. Dogs typically do a lot of pacing back and forth and circling when they are looking for the PERFECT place to pee or poop. They can't do that in a litter box unless they are really small and the litter box his enourmous. Once the dog is house trained and old enough he will be able to hold it for up to 10 or even 12 hours. Now, I am not recommending that this is how long the dog should be left alone, but I'm just trying to say that your workschedule is not unusual. If you crate train him he will hold it so he doesn't pee/ poo in his bed. While he is still young he can't hold it for very long, but by the time he is 6 months old or so, he'll be able to go all day. Just make sure he has a regular schedule and does both in the morning before you go to work. Don't leave any food out for him and only enough water to quench thirst, but not enough to overfill his bladder before you get home. My shepherd is home alone from 7 am until 5:15 pm when I'm gone for work. That's 10 hours and wasn't my plan as I had a different job when I got this dog, but life changes. He hasn't been crated since he was a puppy. So, he does have run of the house all day. If he was miserable he would be destructive, but he doesn't touch a thing and has no accidents. I do have a friend that tries to take him for afternoon walks several times a week to help me out, if her schedule allows. Maybe you can find someone for your dog as well. But I vote no on the litter box. He needs to know that outdoors is the only place do relieve himself.

Why didn't you just get a cat?!? Sorry, i can't help with your question as nothing would turn my stomach more than coming home to the smell of a 'doggy litter box'.. so i have never tried it!

When you clean up the poop, put it in the litter tray, not straight outside, and put him next to it so he learns 'poop goes here'. If it pees or poops on the floor while you are out, then just clean it up with a bit of vinegar in the water so they can't smell where it was. That way they won't go in the same place they did before and they look for somewhere else to put it. If the litter tray smells of their poop, and the floor doesn't, they will put it in the tray, not on the floor.
